Scripture

I love it when bits of the Bible discreetly show up in our everyday lives! “The writing’s on the wall” is a common idiom we use to recognize when bad things are on the way. We’ve all heard it a thousand times but the origin may come as a surprise. A pretty creepy surprise 🙂

Imagine this, you’re at a massive party thrown by a popular, pagan King. Understandably, sin and idolatry are all around and the King revels in his own glory. He goes so far as to take the holy things of God and use them for himself! Suddenly, the music stops and the party goers scream in horror as an unmanned human hand writes an indistinguishable phrase on the wall. I think I’d react the same way as King Belshazzar!

“Then the king’s color changed, and his thoughts alarmed him; his limbs gave way, and his knees knocked together.” Daniel 5:6

Even a man enthroned in all the wonders of the world, surrounded by his Lords, wives and countless concubines falls to his knees at the sight of God’s word. The King is so far from the things of God, only the most alarming sign is strong enough to get his attention. The party stops and the King immediately begins searching for someone to tell him what the message means.

Enter Daniel. After seeking the help of his pagan friends, the King is directed to Daniel who is already famous for interpreting dreams. Daniel shares the foreboding message and refuses to accept the gifts of the King. He already knows the gifts are empty because according to the word of God, the King’s destruction is inevitable. Just as Daniel interprets, the King dies that very night.

Eventually, whether in this life or the next, those submitted to the Lord will receive eternal life and those who oppose Him will be brought low. “The writing is on the wall.”
