Scripture

I loved forts as a kid and still do. There was something great about climbing inside the blankets, pillows, and stuffed animals when it was built inside the house. Outside it was odds and ends and whatever could be found but the feeling of being behind the walls was still great. When I was in 5th grade we lived in apartments where the owners had chosen to add on garages. There were stacks of bricks everywhere. As an adult I reflect on that and wonder why they left stacks of bricks in an open area. As a kid, I reflected on how to best rearrange the bricks for them.

Once finished, we needed to make sure it would protect us. One group stayed within the brick walls while another group assaulted our new fortress using the weapons that lay about the parking lot.  I might pause here to mention that rocks, dirt clods, and brick fragments can create a great deal of havoc when thrown by one group of kids at another group of kids. Our fort was great! Rocks bounced around our heads while we remained comfortably behind the walls. Sticking our heads out of the fort may or may not have resulted in a rogue dirt clod leaving an impression figuratively and literally.

In 2 Samuel 22 David is celebrating God’s goodness and calls HIM his Fortress and deliverer (vs 2). God is our fortress (fort) and when we are with HIM, we are safe. David has been living a life where people were literally throwing rocks at him (and spears, swords, and arrows) yet God was His fortress. Outside was danger that could easily kill but in GOD he was safe.

When we were in our fort, the thrown objects couldn’t hurt us. Stick our head out too long and the story was different. In the world there are sharp objects that can hurt us…. but in God our fortress is eternal, and we are safe. As believers we get hit by the rocks of the world. But eternally our fortress never fails because it’s God himself. It’s why the Bible is full of verses that describe God as our rock and fortress. We can run to him while the rocks fly, and HE takes care of us. So, David was able to see that God was a fortress now and in the life to come!
