Anchor Verses

Galatians 5:1, Ephesians 1:4-5, Ephesians 1:7-10

Focus Statement

We were not rescued because God needed our help, but because He loved us; and now, as redeemed and adopted sons and daughters, we participate in His eternal plan—not to earn His approval, but because we already belong.

Intro: For freedom Christ has set us free!

  • In The Rock, Sean Connery’s character is broken out of prison because the government needs his expertise.
  • But the gospel is different.
  • Christ did not set us free because He needed our help.
He set us free because He didn’t want us enslaved.
  • God is fully sufficient (Acts 17:25).
Salvation is a gift, not a result of works (Ephesians 2:8–9).
  • Like inviting a child into the kitchen, God doesn’t involve us because He needs efficiency—He values relationship.

The Subject

  • In Ephesians 1, God is the actor in every major verb:
    • He blessed.
    • He chose.
    • He predestined.
    • He redeemed.
    • He lavished.
    • He purposed.
  • Ephesians isn’t about God recruiting specialists; it’s about Him adopting sons and daughters.
  • Once you realize you weren’t saved because you were useful but because you were loved:
    • Obedience isn’t repayment.
    • Service isn’t leverage.
    • Mission isn’t earning.
  • It’s participation in something already in motion.

Predestined

  • God chose us before the foundation of the world.
  • The gospel is “pre-” grace:
    • Pre-chosen
    • Pre-loved
    • Pre-forgiven
  • This reshapes how we see ourselves and others.
    • We stop saying: “If only they would fix their behavior…”
      • Because the root issue is identity, not performance.
    • We stop thinking: “Once I get it together, then God will be pleased.”
      • God chose you knowing your weaknesses.

Redeemed and Lavished

  • Redemption means freedom cost something.
    • Jesus bore mockery, betrayal, torture, and the weight of sin so we could be released.
  • Lavished means God did not do this reluctantly.
    • The cross is both costly and abundant.
  • This guards us from:
    • Pride (“I earned this.”)
    • Shame (“I’ve used up my grace.”)
  • You are not barely tolerated—you are extravagantly loved.

The Purpose/The Plan

  • God is not only saving individuals; He is uniting all things in Christ.
  • Your freedom is not random—it is part of His eternal plan.
  • In The Rock, once freed, Mason disappears to live on his own terms.
  • But Christ did not free us to build our own little kingdoms. He rescued us into His kingdom.
    • We are not consultants—we are participants.

Walking it Out:

  • Rest in Grace
    • Stop negotiating with God. When you fail, run to Him—not from Him.
  • See Others Through Election, Not Behavior
    • If God chose before behavior changed, we don’t withhold love until behavior changes.
  • Participate, Don’t Perform
    • Serve with joy, not anxiety.
  • Obedience is response.
  • Mission is invitation.
  • Holiness is identity lived out.
    • You don’t serve because God needs help. You serve because sons and daughters join the family work.
