Focus Statement
We are saved by grace through faith alone, but the faith that saves is never alone. It shows up in how we live.
Introduction
- Imagine someone offers to sell you a watermelon, and you look down to find a rock painted green. It looks the part, but it isn’t the real thing. King Saul had the crown, the anointing, and the title, but his life didn’t match the claim. James asks us the same question this week: if you say you have faith, does your life show it? We aren’t saved by our works. But real faith never stays put. It moves.
Part I: Faith That Flows (James 2:14–17)
- Saved BY grace, THROUGH faith, FOR good works (Ephesians 2:8–10).
- By grace: the source is God, not us.
- Through faith: the hand that receives the gift, not the payment for it.
- For good works: the purpose we were saved into.
- The hose: God is the source, grace is the water, faith is the hose, and good works are the garden that grows.
- A hose with no water is religion without grace.
- A kinked hose is connected but produces nothing.
- A healthy hose always leaves something green behind it.
- You can tell where the water went by what’s growing.
Part II: Faith That Shows (James 2:18–23)
- “Even the demons believe” (2:19). Knowing the facts isn’t the same as trusting God.
- Satan quoted Psalm 91 to Jesus but left out “in all your ways” (Matthew 4:5–6). Half a verse can be a whole lie.
- Abraham’s timeline:
- Genesis 15: Abraham believed, and God counted it to him as righteousness.
- Genesis 22: Decades later, Abraham offered Isaac. His obedience didn’t make him righteous. It proved what God had already declared.
- “Justified” in two senses:
- Paul (Romans 3:28): declared righteous before God.
- James (2:24): shown to be righteous before others.
- Apply:
- Close the head-to-heart gap. Is what you know changing you?
- What’s your Isaac? What are you withholding from God?
- Obey before you feel ready. Faith doesn’t mean you’re not scared. It means you obey anyway.
Part III: Faith That Goes (James 2:24–26)
- “Not by faith alone” describes a faith that sits by itself and does nothing.
- As the Reformers put it: we’re saved by faith alone, but the faith that saves is never alone.
- Abraham and Rahab: James pairs the most honored man in Israel with a Canaanite prostitute. Whoever you are, real faith looks the same: it moves.
- King Saul: When Samuel asked, “What have you done?” (1 Samuel 13:11), Saul made excuses.
- We do the same thing: “Based on the circumstances, I had to…”
- Disobedience has real consequences now, not just someday.
Walking it Out
- Is my faith enough? Grace is completely sufficient. The question is whether your faith is alive.
- Saved by grace, shown by works.
- A new question: Samuel asked Saul, “What have you done?” Because of Jesus, God now asks, “What are you going to do?”
- You’re not alone: “It is God who works in you” (Philippians 2:13). The Spirit empowers what God commands (Ezekiel 36:27).
- This week’s challenge: Take one step of obedience: forgive someone, meet a need, or do what you’ve been putting off.
Next Week…
- James 3:1-12 Words to Witness
- This week we saw that real faith shows up in what we do. Next week, James turns to one of the first places it shows up: what we say. He compares the tongue to a spark that sets a forest on fire, a small thing with huge power. Our words reveal what’s really in our hearts, and they either strengthen or weaken our witness.
