Focus Statement

When life doesn’t match your expectations, God is still at work—not serving your preferences, but forming you into who you’re meant to become.

Introduction: When It’s Not What You Expected

  • Life often doesn’t look like what we thought it would
  • We’re given something different than what we wanted
  • In those moments:
    • Not just disappointment
    • Confusion and loss of direction
  • Big question:
    • What do you do when you don’t even know what to ask for?

When You Don’t Know What You Need

  • Romans 8:26-27
    • Weakness = limited understanding
  • We feel:
    • Overwhelmed
    • Confused
    • Unable to articulate
  • The Spirit:
    • Helps in our weakness
    • Intercedes for us
    • Aligns our prayers with God’s will
  • You ask for relief → God works transformation
  • You ask for escape → God works formation
  • Key Line:
    • God hears what you mean, not just what you say

When You Don’t Like What You’re Given

  • Romans 8:28-29
    • God works all things for good
    • But “good” ≠ comfort, ease, or preference
    • Good = being conformed to Christ
    • What God may use:
      • Disappointment
      • Delay
      • Confusion
      • Loss
    • The issue isn’t always what’s on your plate
    • It’s that we don’t know what we actually need
    • Key Line:
      • God is not serving your preference—He’s preparing your transformation

When You Wonder If God Is Done

    • Romans 8:30
      • God’s work is complete and intentional

No gaps in His process:

    • Predestined
    • Called
    • Justified
    • Glorified
  • You are not abandoned—you are in process
  • What God starts, He finishes
  • Key Line:
    • You’re not at the end yet

Walking It Out

  • 1. Be Honest About Your Groaning
    • Bring your frustration and confusion to God
    • Stop trying to have perfect words
  • 2. Surrender Your Expectations
    • Let go of your version of “good”
    • Trust God’s definition instead
  • 3. Stay at the Table
    • Don’t walk away too early
    • Don’t judge the outcome mid-process
    • Keep trusting the One who is preparing it

Final Thought

  • You may not understand what God is doing…but you can trust what He’s producing.

Next Week…

  • It’s one thing to trust God
  • It’s another to stay with Him
  • Next week: learning to abide—remaining connected to Him in the middle of what you don’t understand
