Anchor Verses
Exodus 25:8, 1 Kings 8:30, Matthew 27:51
Focus Statement
The church is not defined by what it does, but by who it is in God’s presence—we are a house of prayer.
Intro: Identity Before Activity
- We often define church by:
- Gathering
- Singing
- Serving
- Attending
- Danger:
- Defining church by activity instead of identity
- Key Idea:
- If you’re confused about your identity, you’ll stay busy with the wrong mission
- Because of Jesus:
- We don’t just have future hope
- We have present access to God
Presence Over Programming
- Exodus 25:8
- God’s desire:
- To dwell with His people
- Key truth:
- God’s presence preceded His instructions
- Before structure:
- There was relationship
- There was presence
- Warning (Golden Calf):
- Israel replaced God’s presence with something controllable
Activity replaced intimacy- Truth:
- You can be busy doing things for God
- And still miss the presence of God
- Value:
- Presence over programming
- Programming isn’t bad—but it’s not primary
- Anchor:
- That’s why we are called a house of prayer
A Way to Approach God
- 1 Kings 8:30
- The temple:
- A meeting place between God and His people
- Prayer:
- Not just asking
- How people approached and aligned with God
- Truth:
- Prayer isn’t just something we do
- It’s how we relate to God
- Limitation:
- Access was restricted
- Temple Structure:
- Outer Court → most people
- Inner Court → priests only
- Holy of Holies → high priest, once a year
- Key Truth:
- You could approach God
- But not fully access God
Jesus Removed the Distance
- Matthew 27:51
- The veil:
- Represented separation from God
- At the cross:
- Torn from top to bottom
- God made the way
- Truth:
- The barrier is gone
- Access is open
- Jesus didn’t make a visit possible:
- He made dwelling possible
- Isaiah 56:7
- “A house of prayer for all nations”
- No more:
- Inner vs outer
- Qualified vs unqualified
- Identity Shift:
- The house of prayer is not a place you go
- It’s a people you become
- Anchor:
- That’s why we are called a house of prayer
Walking It Out — Living as a House of Prayer
- 1. You don’t have to earn access
- Come to God as you are
- Access is based on Jesus, not performance
- 2. You can meet with God in everyday moments
- Prayer is not just scheduled
- It’s a daily awareness with God:
- In your car
- At work
- In decisions
- In conversations
- 3. Don’t replace presence with activity
- Danger:
- Busyness can replace intimacy
- Warning:
- Doing things for God ≠ being with God
- Truth:
- You can fill your life with things about God, and still miss being with God
Final Though
- You don’t have to knock for access anymore…you’ve been invited to dwell in His presence. You are His house of prayer.
