Focus Statement
True satisfaction isn’t found in getting what we want, but in abiding in Christ—where God lovingly prunes us so we can grow into lasting, Spirit-formed fruit.
Introduction: The Longing We All Feel
- We all carry a sense of longing:
- A desire to be filled, satisfied, whole
- But:
- We try to fill it with outcomes, comfort, control, and it never quite works
- Scripture tells us:
- God is the one who satisfies the longing soul
- Not temporarily—but deeply and fully
- Big question: Where are you going to be filled—and what happens when God doesn’t fill you the way you expected?
Abiding Is the Source, Not Striving
- John 15:1–5
- Jesus doesn’t say:
- Try harder
- Do more
- Produce fruit
- He says:
- Abide
- The branch doesn’t strain to produce fruit
It stays connected- Key Idea: Fruit is not the result of effort—it’s the result of connection
Pruning Is Not Punishment
- Sometimes what once looked healthy…isn’t meant for the next season
- God:
- Doesn’t send the storm
- But He does tend the plant
- Pruning:
- Feels like loss
- Feels like reduction
- Feels like “why is this being taken?”
- But:
- It’s intentional
- It’s personal
- It’s loving
- Just like the plants:
- Not all are cut the same
- Not all seasons require the same pruning
- Key Idea: God doesn’t cut to harm you—He cuts to heal and grow you
The Word Shapes What We Can’t See
- 2 Timothy 3:16
- “The Word of God I think of as a straight edge, which shows up on our own crookedness. We can’t really tell how crooked our thinking is until we line it up with the straight edge of Scripture.” ~Elizabeth Elliot
- We don’t always see clearly
- We don’t always think rightly
- The Word:
- Reveals
- Corrects
- Aligns
- It’s the straight edge against our crooked thinking
- Key Idea: Abiding isn’t passive—it’s staying rooted in truth
The Fruit Is Evidence of the Root
- Galatians 5:22–25
- Love
- Joy
- Peace
- Patience
- Kindness
- Goodness
- Faithfulness
- Gentleness
- Self-control
- These aren’t personality traits; They’re Spirit-produced fruit
- And: They grow when we keep in step with the Spirit
- Key Line: If the fruit isn’t there, the answer isn’t more effort—it’s deeper abiding
Walking It Out
- Stay Connected Daily
- Not just belief—ongoing relationship
- Trust the Pruning Process
- Don’t resist what God is removing
- Root Yourself in the Word
- Let it shape how you think and respond
Final Thought
- The places where God is cutting may feel like loss—but they are actually the places where He is making room for life.
