Focus Statement

Head knowledge becomes heart obedience when the Spirit governs the inner life.

Intro: Powerless

  • We often find ourselves in a frustrating place:
    • We know what is right
    • We want to do what is right
    • But when the moment comes… we don’t
  • It’s like sitting in a car with everything in place—but no power. You can turn the wheel and press the pedals, but nothing moves.
  • Scripture shows us why: the law reveals what is right, but it cannot empower us to live it. Our rescue does not come from striving, but from Christ’s finished work.
  • God didn’t just give us truth—He gave us a Helper.
  • The Holy Spirit:
    • Teaches us over time
    • Reminds us in the moment
    • Walks with us in real time
  • The Christian life is not about trying harder—it’s about trusting the One who leads.

Apart from Him, Nothing Works

  • Jesus said, “Apart from me you can do nothing.”
  • Our struggle isn’t a knowledge problem—it’s a heart problem.
  • Like Augustine once prayed, “Make me pure… but not yet,” we often delay obedience because we don’t want to surrender.
  • We don’t need more information—we need connection.

The Spirit Teaches and Reminds

  • The Spirit forms us over time and meets us in the moment.
    • He teaches through Scripture and conviction
    • He reminds us of truth when we’re about to ignore it
  • Obedience is not just applying knowledge—it’s responding to Someone speaking to us.
    • The question is not, “Is the Spirit speaking?”
    • The question is, “Are we willing to go where He’s leading?”

Walk by the Spirit

  • Walking by the Spirit is not a one-time decision—it’s a daily, moment-by-moment surrender.
  • It looks like:
    • Pausing before reacting
    • Listening when conviction comes
    • Choosing obedience—even when it costs
  • It’s not about saying “God, take the wheel” once—it’s about staying in the passenger seat.

Walking it Out

  • We practice life in the Spirit through three disciplines:
    • Stay Connected — Prayer
Prayer keeps us dependent on God and aware of His presence.
    • Fill Your Mind — Scripture
The Spirit reminds us of what we’ve already received—Scripture shapes how we hear Him.
    • Respond in the Moment — Obedience
When the Spirit nudges, convicts, or redirects—respond.
  • Prayer connects you.
  • Scripture tunes you.
  • Obedience moves you.
