WORSHIP

SCRIPTURE

When I was in University, I “looked” like a great Christian. I led worship in chapel, I coordinated bible studies with my church, and I carried a big Bible around with me. Most people assumed my faith was as big as my Bible! It rarely was.

I “looked” the part and don’t get me wrong, I was growing in my faith, but underneath the “Christian” surface, I had lingering sin holding me back. This sin was established over a long period of time and had almost become a part of my identity. It was comfortable. I was “getting away with it” and still calling myself a “Christian.”

When I read about Lot and his family living in Sodom, I wonder what on earth they were doing there in the first place?! How had Lot found his way into a city so deeply rooted in sin? I can imagine Lot casually overlooking the way the city around him affected his holiness and over time, feeling more and more “at home.”

Then in His mercy, God sends messengers to save Lot and his entire family from judgment and destruction. I expect Lot to drop everything and run for his life, but instead, he drags his feet. His sons actually laugh at the warning and end up staying behind! How could they be so ambivalent? Thankfully, God’s messengers drag Lot out of town despite his hesitancy. Is anyone else on the edge of their seat thinking this guy is crazy? I’d have packed my bags hours ago!

Genesis 19:15 With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished.”

Righteousness is not a joke. There is an urgency about escaping our sin that we forget in the comfort of our daily lives. If only we all had angels dragging us away from inevitable destruction. God has so much more available for our lives if we would simply choose to be “all in” with our holiness.

CLOSING PRAYER
God, thank You for Your mercy and grace. Thank You for Your blood that has paid my ransom. Help me to see sin for what it is and where it leads. I commit myself to Your righteousness even in the places I feel hesitant to lay at Your feet. Your ways are higher, and I trust what You say. Amen.
